Success Stories With A Difference
When people think about success stories they often revert to common stories of wealthy businessmen. Chances are when you think about successful people you think of someone like Donald Trump, Alan Sugar, Richard Branson, Warren Buffet or Bill Gates. Certainly, they are successful in terms of having built global businesses and they are also financially successful. However, success shouldn’t be judged based on financial achievement alone. The reason I think these people are successful is because they started with nothing and built up their empires from scratch. That shows a huge amount of character and determination.
There are some great sporting achievements from people like Muhammed Ali, Usaine Bolt and Michael Phelps who are equally successful but in a different way. These stories are no doubt inspirational but have been told a thousand times. Also, because these people are so INCREDIBLY successful, sometimes it’s easy to become detached from their success because it seems so unlikely that we might have this much success. So let’s look at some other, less well known, success stories of people who have achieved remarkable things in their lives.
For me, Liz is living proof that your upbringing is no excuse for poor performance
in life. Liz was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, by poor and drug addicted parents. After her mother dies of AIDS when she was just 15, Liz became homeless and had a terrible time trying to make ends meet whilst also supporting her sister and trying to get an education. Against all odds, she graduated high and then went on to be accepted into Harvard. Her story, Homeless to Harvard is available online and is a worthwhile read for those who love a good success story!
Nick is an incredibly inspirational success story. Born with no arms and no legs,
he would be excused for not having any great success in life given his disability. However, Nick has achieved more in his life in the last 10 years than most able people would I their entire lives. It’s not just that Nick can drive, swim and even surf without arms or legs, it’s also that he dedicates his life to inspiring others. His goals are very clear and he is probably one of the most successful people on the planet!
Jessica’s story is so inspirational not just because she became the first pilot to fly with no arms, but also because flying was her biggest fear. She had the courage to not only FACE her fears, but to overcome great adversity and learn to fly with her feet.
Craig was a very early starter on achieving his goals. At the age of 12, he read a horrifying story about a young boy in Pakistan who was brutally murdered for trying to abolish child labour. Craig was so distressed by what he read, he started a group with his classmates called “Twelve-Years-Old” which would later become “Free The Children”. He has since dedicated his life to improving conditions for children in under developed countries. His charity has provided over 650 new schools in 45 developing countries.
Zach is another great example of how even having a severe disability should not stop you from achieving your goals. He shot to fame in 2010 when he entered a television competition to get his own show. What’s more, the television show that Zach wanted to create and present was a travel show. This may not sound challenging until you understand that Zach has a cerebral palsy, and that travelling even short distances can be challenging for him. Nonetheless, he did one of the funniest audition videos I have ever seen and was able to create the show he dreamed about.
Chris was, in many ways, a normal guy in a normal job who wanted a change (perhaps you can relate to this?). In 2008 he decided he would he wanted to start earning money online, and so with no computer skills whatsoever, embarked on a journey into the online world. Within 6 months of starting his own online business he was earning $250 per day on a regular basis. After 9 months he had his first $1,000 day. He continued to work hard and learn his industry and in August 2010 he earned $1,000,000 in a single day.
This is an incredible achievement in itself given that he had absolutely no idea what he was doing when he first went into the online industry. However, what he did next was equally inspiring because he is now dedicating the rest of his career to teaching others how to replicate his success. Don’t underestimate how unique this is among successful business people. Can you imagine Bill Gates giving away the rights to Windows? Or Warren Buffet providing personal coaching on his trading method for just a few dollars per month? That’s exactly what Chris does now. He shares his success with anyone who has the drive and determination to learn a few new skills and wishes to earn more money.
